5 things you didn´t know you could do in Coronado, Panama

Coronado is a coastal city located about one hour from Panama City. Its unique location makes it the perfect place to enjoy nature and cultural routes in the region. Coronado has lots to offer apart from its exotic beaches and is also an excellent spot for people who love outdoor activities.

Coronado’s gardens, waterfalls, beaches and rock formations are all great options when planning a stroll around the city. And depending on the route you choose, you can go walking, by bicycle or ground transport.

These are just five of the activities that do can do on your next visit to Coronado, or even keep in mind if you’re visiting Panama City and wondering what else you can do after spending time at all the tourist spots.

  1. Coronado Beach

The exotic white beaches of Coronado with their peculiar speckled black are the result of the intense activity from the Chame and El Valle volcanos thousands of years ago. You can do water sports like snorkelling, sailing, surfing, go on a boat trip, or just enjoy a stroll along the beach. It’s perfect for a relaxing afternoon thanks to its average year-round temperature of 27°C.

  1. Coronado Dry Forest

A stroll around the 45 hectares of forest is an absolute delight and only takes about 40 minutes.  Its trees are small, often measuring less than 10 meters. The information signs describe the different flora and fauna that have a strong marine influence and form part of this young forest in regeneration. It’s also Panama´s best conserved and most easily accessed dry forest.

  1. Anton’s Valley

Valle de Antón, generally called El Valle (Anton’s Valley) is a small village located on what was the lake of the second largest volcanic crater in the world. It was the home of indigenous communities for hundreds of years and is also one of the last remaining habitats of the critically endangered Panamanian golden frog. Anton’s Valley has a broad range of activities that are sure to leave you surprised by the incredible nature.The “Piedra Pintada” is a must visit from the Petroglyphs period with rocks engraved with symbolic designs from the pre-Columbian culture. These are found under the crater formation known as The Sleeping Indian Girl, a chain of hills with the silhouette of an Indian girl lying west of El Valle.

Another must is a visit to the Nispero botanical gardens, which is home to an amphibian conservation centre and the orchid centre, where you see 147 different types of this delicate flower.

  1. Golfing

La Arenosa Lake is located in the Chorrera district, and part of the Gatun Lake reservoir, which was created during the construction of the Panama Canal to dam the Chagres River so high draft boats could pass through, and with its spectacular views is the perfect spot for fishing and mountain enthusiasts. The boats leave from the port and don’t worry if you don’t have any fishing gear as the trip includes the boat ride, fishing rods and bait, boots and takes you to the best fishing spots.
