Varahicacos Ecological Reserve is a must for lovers of ecotourism

Less than 10 minutes from Varadero, at the end of the peninsula Hicacos, Varahicacos Ecological Reserve presents itself as the lung of the area. Also known as “The Other Varadero,” it is a green oasis, full of indigenous vegetation and fauna that offers visitors different routes to enjoy a day between trails.

Over 124 acres are preserved 220 plant species, 159 bird species and over 40 animal species according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of Cuba. In fact, it is home to what is known as “The Patriarch” – a cactus of over 500 years of age and the height of a tree.

Visitors can choose between several paths of about an hour to visit, as well as two archaeological sites to see. The first, “Ambrosio,” is a cave of about 250 meters with pictography and drawings. The second, “Terraza de los musulmanes” (The Terrace of Muslims), is known for the findings of human remains over 2500 years old, as well as stone tools.

Moreover, the reserve is home to the ruins of the Salina La Calavera, of the oldest remnants of Spanish colonization.

Choose between BelleVue Palma Real, ideal if you love to dance, and BelleVue Puntarena Playa Caleta, if you enjoy water sports, to enjoy Varadero and the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve.
