Visiting Gibraltar or enjoying the beaches of Tarifa are an ideal complementary plan to Marbella
Visiting the Costa del Sol is much more than discovering Marbella, enjoying the luxury of Puerto Banus, lounging on its beaches or visiting Malaga, the capital. If your vacation in this area allow for more, taking a leap to Gibraltar and Tarifa is one of the most desirable proposals.
At an exact hour from Marbella you can visit a non-Spanish territory, a British overseas territory, to be precise. We arrived at Gibraltar. Short of seven square kilometers, on an isthmus next to the Spanish town of La Linea de la Concepcion, Gibraltar offers visitors a curious visit where a British stamp coexists with a language called ‘llanito’ (mixture of Spanish and English) and with monkeys that live freely.
The excursion to Gibraltar can be done perfectly in one morning. Don’t miss out on a stroll down Main Street and a photograph in a typical English phone booth. Nor the Casemates Square, the Parliament or the Officers Guard, where you can traditionally encounter a bobby in a gala uniform.
Before eating, you must take the cable car and climb the rock, after passing through the botanical garden. Above, apart from fantastic views, you will find the Gibraltar macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe. They are free to move throughout the country but are usually concentrated in this area. It is said, due to a superstition, that the British lwill leave the Rock the day the monkeys do, so these primates are very well taken care of.
At lunchtime, we drive less than an hour to reach the spectacular Tarifa, in the province of Cadiz: its beaches don’t disappoint.
With large white sand beaches, dunes included, wild vegetation, and with an environment which brings together the lovers of kite surfing and fans of windsurfing, Tarifa is always a ‘must’ to visit during the summer. Among its most famous beaches are the Valdevaqueros, Punta Paloma or Bolonia..
A mojito between chillout music at the beach bar “Art Life,” one of the most famous in the area, will be the ideal place to end the 10 alternative trip to the Costa del Sol.
