7 best apps to get you to the airport on time

One of the hardest parts of travel is sometimes actually getting yourself to the airport, at least before your plane leaves. Luckily, these awesome free (unless otherwise specified) apps will make sure you never miss a flight again.

Embark(iOS): I live in NYC, and it’s not uncommon for trains to just stop running for any odd reason. Typically this happens when you really need to take said train to catch a flight. Embark has been my savior numerous times, re-routing me quickly so I don’t miss my flight. Similar apps include HopStop (iOS), Moovit (iOS & Android & Windows), and Transit App (iOS & Android).

Groundlink(iOS & Android): Uber may be the hot car service at the moment; however, it lacks the ability to pre-schedule your pick-up time. As a result of it’s price-gouging business model, you may be left waiting or forced to spend a fortune depending on the time you need a ride and the current demand (good luck to you if you need a ride in a storm). This is where Groundlink comes in —  you can pre-schedule a black car and receive your price beforehand (no paying extra for waiting in traffic). If the drive is more than 5 minutes late you also get a free ride up to $75.

Scout(iOS & Android): Essentially a combination of Yelp, Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Meetup, Scout provides audible and visual directions when driving to the airport — taking you on the least-trafficked routes using modern mapping technology — and providing local recommendations, like gas stations and parking. If a friend is driving you, plan a meetup with one click. The app will send them your location, meeting time and directions, with notifications showing you how close they are along the way.

AirportParking(iOS): If you’re driving your own car, finding parking will be one potential obstacle, which is why the aptly-named AirportParking is so great. It lets you browse and reserve airport parking before arrival (typically at a discount rate) and shows you shuttle times to get to the terminal. A similar app for Android users is Best Parking.

Sleep Cycle(iOS & Android): No more mismatched socks and Einstein hair for early fliers, as Sleep Cycle alarm clock scientifically analyzes your sleep patterns. It goes under your pillow and wakes you up when you are most rested (within a pre-selected time frame).

Flightradar24(iOS & Android, $2.99): While Flightradar24 has a free version, it’s worth the $2.99 for the uber-detailed aircraft and route information, the ability to turn the screen into a real time Arrivals & Departures board, and watch airplanes move across a detailed map in real time. You can even point your smartphone at the sky to identify aircraft.

  1. GateGuru(iOS & Android): If tardy fliers could only download one app, it should be GateGuru which, along with flight tracking also completely maps out your airport experience, from the terminal to checkin to security (including wait times) to the amenities nearby (no need to miss your flight during a hunt for Starbucks Iced Caramel Macchiato).
