Neither basketball nor football. Baseball is the most popular sport in the Dominican Republic, which holds the current title of champion of the Classic Baseball World Cup, which it won last year by beating Puerto Rico.
In fact, it is curious to know how it has become the most important sport. It was in the nineteenth century when some Cuban students in the United States returned to the island and introduced the sport in their country. It was the Cubans during the Ten Years’ War who later brought the sport to the Dominican Republic.
It is like an entire religion and has a regular league played by such teams as Tigres de Licey, the most famous among them, Águilas Cibaeñas, Leones del Escogido, Estrellas Orientales, Toros del Este and Gigantes del Cibao.
Furthermore, it is the largest exporter of baseball players to bigger leagues (Major League Baseball) after the United States, such as Mexico and Japan.
And, despite being 125 years old, baseball is already regarded as the most popular sport in the Dominican Republic.
