Swimming with Whale Sharks on Holbox Island

0

Holbox is a small island in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico, which attracts a lot of visitors because of its spectacular beaches of clear waters, and its white sands, for its exquisite gastronomy, rich in seafood dishes – a must try is the traditional lobster pizza – but above all for the incredible experience of swimming with the largest fish on the planet, the Whale Shark.

From May to September, Whale Sharks usually reach the waters of the Caribbean, near Holbox Island and Cancun, in schools of up to 40 of them, in search of plankton, their main food.

The Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus) also known as Domino Shark because of its black and white patterns, can reach up to 18 meters in length, however, is a species without teeth, harmless and very peaceful.

Among the recommendations made to visitors are not to touch these beautiful animals, as the chemicals of sun blockers and other personal hygiene products can damage their skin. And of course visitors are asked to be very respectful to them, since being a very peaceful species, disturbing them could represent they feeling threatened and not returning to the warm waters of the Caribbean in the future.

In Cancun and Riviera Maya there are many tours to take you to interact with these giant animals; some tours include transfer from your hotel, the boat tour  with an expert guide, all the necessary equipment for the snorkel and some light refreshments.

Usually the boat tour can take one or more hours to get into the high seas and once there, wait patiently for the Wale Shark to appear. Once you see one of them, the boat will approach and visitors will be able to submerge once or twice, and swim right next to it.

This activity is a good option for children over 10 years old, and although most tours include life jackets, swimming is a must to enjoy this activity.

Other marine species that you can find during the tour are the Manta Diablo (Giant Oceanic Manta Ray), a majestic animal of great dimensions, dolphins and turtles. However they are not as abundant in the summer as the Whale Shark.
