The Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) confirms Malaga-Costa del Sol airport’s growth as one of the largest observed in Europe after releasing its report for the first six months of 2016.

According to the ACI, which gathers data on more than 500 European airports, Malaga-Costa del Sol airport has seen passenger traffic grow by 14.6% in the first six months of 2016 when compared to the same period last year.

Malaga-Costa del Sol airport is third in its category, regarding growth during the first six months of 2016, and surpassed only by Cologne-Bonn (19.8%) and Alicante-Elche (16.1%).

When assessing the growth, ACI Europe divided the airports by passenger numbers. Group 1 is for airports welcoming more than 25 million passengers per year, and group 2, which includes Malaga-Costa del Sol, is for airports with between 10 and 25 million passengers per year. Group 3 is for airports receiving between 5 and 10 million passengers, and group 4 is for airports with less than 5 million passengers.

Regarding the figures for June, Malaga-Costa del Sol airport also took third position in its category by behind Gran Canaria (+22.3%) and Alicante (+15.8%).

“This data confirms that the Costa del Sol is having a magnificent year for tourism, showing it’s on track to deliver record numbers, and furthermore revealing significant growth within a European context”, said Elías Bendodo, president of Turismo Costa del Sol. He also mentioned, “the stable growth observed during this six month period adds further weight to the possibility that the second half of 2016 could help to reach historical records for tourism in the province of Malaga.”
