A digital world in support of sustainable tourism

Tourism4SDGs.org is a digital platform that encourages internet users to participate in achieving SDGs through tourism initiatives worldwide as part of one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2005 and subsequently implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 2006. These goals are a global call to end poverty, protect and care for the planet and ensure a happy and prosperous life for all humankind, and are to be met successfully by 2030.

The tourism sector is of vital importance to achieve these goals, as it accounts for more than 10% of global GDP and jobs, and the reason why the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) created the Tourism4SDGs platform.

The platform consists of three main categories promoting the call to action:

  1. Learn: This category refers to free access to information about sustainable tourism from experts, professionals and travellers from all over the world.
  2. Share: Share your events, initiatives, research, policy papers and stories, and show the world what you’ve been doing for SDGs.
  3. Act: This is the most important category, which focuses on analysing what the next steps are to make a difference in the world of tourism.

It’s widely believed that tourism has a direct impact on achieving the 17 SDGs since it has reached maturity in its economic activity, which has led to very deep social roots and requires the global community to meet and achieve the goals of Agenda 2030.
