Thailand is hosting the first edition of Biennale, one of the most important national artistic initiatives and the country’s leading international exhibition of contemporary art, which is currently being promoted by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture (OCAC) and the Ministry of Culture in Bangkok.
The exhibition, which continues until February 28, has three sections that will serve to promote national and international art, and unlike other conventional art museum exhibitions, will exhibit the artworks outdoors on natural sites of historical and cultural significance in Krabi.
Section 1 is an international art competition, with an open call for emerging artists worldwide. An international jury will select the artists and their most outstanding works to blend into the Thai landscape.
Section 2 is an exhibition of artworks by Thai and international artists under the theme of “Edge of the Wonderland“. In this 1st edition, the chosen artworks will be exhibited at several Krabi sites including Bok Khorani National Park, Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park, and other public places around Krabi town.
Finally, section 3 of Biennale 2018 consists of academic activities with educational and art knowledge exchanges, talks and workshops for Thai and international artists and art students.
Krabi, the exhibition’s natural space
The artistic event represents a further attraction to visit southern Thailand, and the province of Krabi is the first destination in the country to host this edition.
The province of Krabi is not only known for its bays, secluded beaches accessible only on the famous long-tail boats, wildlife and marine sanctuaries with coral reefs and labyrinthine archipelagos with popular destinations like Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Railay Beach.
It is also an ideal destination for hikers with Than Bok Khorani National Park, which has been chosen as one of the natural spaces for the exhibition. The park and its amazing landscapes of waterfalls and mangrove forests is an ideal spot for sports, fresh air and now, also for art. Major attractions inside the park include Chao Le Cave and the islands of Dang and Hong, which are both great spots for diving.
Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Marine Park, Nopparat Thara Beach, Poda Island, Railay, Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam, Khao, Kha Nab Nam, Klong Muay Beach will be converted into lively artistic enclaves for the first edition of Biennale, and for visitors to enjoy.
