Music festival boom

They’ve always been around, but now they’re everywhere. Music festivals, great for some and a nightmare for others, are booming in Spain.

According to dod Magazine, Spain hosts about 100 music festivals between June and September, and this figure could easily reach 150.

Most of these festivals are geared towards an indie audience, and just like interrailing, this means throwing a backpack over your shoulder and travelling around the country in search of your favourite bands and a good vibe.

On the plus side, doors are opening for more indie groups like Lori Meyers, Supersubmarina, Izal, and Miss Caffeina, making them almost household names. Commercial radio stations like Los 40 Principales are now even playing their music.

Another bonus is the increase in tourism, even small towns that don’t often receive tourists are seeing the positive side of the festival boom.

And now onto the not so positive, if this really is a short-term boom, we’re going to witness a drop at some stage, and this can only mean a lack of variety and the same acts playing at all the festivals. In fact, this point is one of the limitations for festivals organisers today.

What we do know for sure is thanks to the festivals wider audiences are being reached. Now the only question is, if it’s time to think about the future of music festivals.
